Negotiating is certainly a key component of the interview process and also one of the most stressful. While negotiating, it's important to look at the "big picture", e.g., while the first year salary/guarantee needs to be a strong consideration, compensation in years 2 through 5 should be looked at closely as well.

Other negotiating points to keep in mind:

  1. Select and rank the most important objectives to you and then be prepared to concede the lesser points.
  2. Accept the reality that you will not win all your objectives... negotiating is a give and take process.
  3. It's best if the physician candidate directly handles the negotiations, as opposed to a spouse or an attorney.
  4. In addition to the first year salary, you must factor into the equation the benefits, office hours, the call schedule, vacation/CME time, partnership track, etc. And, in addition, how much you desire the position.
  5. Contracts should be reviewed by an attorney for unreasonable terms and conditions. Your SMA recruiter can serve as an intermediary to ensure all parties are comfortable with the agreement(s).
In conclusion, remember to be flexible in your negotiations, particularly if you truly believe this position is a "good fit" for you.
